In a distressing turn of events, Benjamin Kiplagat, a prominent Olympic athlete, has been brutally murdered. The Kenyan-born runner, aged 34, who proudly represented Uganda in the 3,000m steeplechase at numerous Olympic Games and World Championships, was discovered lifeless in a car on the outskirts of Eldoret.
The grim incident occurred on Saturday night, where Kiplagat was found with a fatal knife wound to his neck.
Local police commander Stephen Okal addressed the media, confirming that an investigation has been initiated, and officers are actively pursuing leads on the ground in Eldoret.
The severity of the injury to Kiplagat’s neck strongly indicates that he was stabbed. Reports suggest that the athlete had been training in the Eldoret region before heading to Uganda to participate in athletics competitions.
Kiplagat’s illustrious running career, spanning approximately 18 years, included notable achievements such as winning the silver medal in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2008 World Junior Championships and securing bronze at the Africa Championships in 2012.
This heartbreaking incident follows the October 2021 killing of Kenyan distance running star Agnes Tirop, who was tragically found stabbed to death at the age of 25 in her home in Iten.
Tirop’s husband, Ibrahim Rotich, faced trial for her murder last month. The 43-year-old has vehemently denied the charges against him and was released on bail just before the commencement of the trial. The unsettling pattern of violence against accomplished athletes in the region casts a somber shadow over the athletic community.
