Kelvin Kiptum, the newly crowned world marathon record holder, received an exuberant reception upon his return to Kenya on Tuesday, following his remarkable triumph in the Chicago Marathon on Sunday with a remarkable time of 2:00:35.
Kiptum’s Heroic Homecoming and Record-Breaking Triumph
Kiptum, who already held the titles for the Valencia and London marathons, was honored with a reward of 5 million Kenyan shillings (equivalent to about 33,580 U.S. dollars) from the Kenyan government.
It’s worth noting that the previous marathon record, set at 2:01:09, was achieved by Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge in Berlin the year before.
Kiptum’s return to Nairobi’s bustling Jomo Kenyatta International Airport caused a frenzy of excitement as a crowd eagerly awaited his arrival, swelling around him as soon as he landed.
In a heartwarming tradition of his native Kalenjin community, moments after his arrival, the 23-year-old marathon sensation was adorned with leaves from the revered “Sinendet” tree, a practice reserved for honoring distinguished guests or returning warriors from a victorious conquest.

A Hero’s Welcome and an Eye on the Future
As he exited the airport, he was carried on shoulders by well-wishers. His wife, Asenath Kagogo, offered him a sip of the traditional fermented milk, “Mursik,” from a ceremonial gourd while his seven-year-old son, Caleb, and four-year-old daughter, Precious, looked on.
Kiptum’s family, friends, as well as officials from Athletics Kenya, were present to celebrate this momentous occasion.
Following the initial reception, Kiptum was escorted in a convoy of SUVs to a Nairobi hotel, where he held a press conference, attended by both local and international media.
The focus shifted to the potential showdown with two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge, the former record holder, at the Paris 2024 Summer Games next year.
Kiptum expressed his readiness and anticipation for a race against Eliud Kipchoge, welcoming the possibility of both being selected to represent Kenya on the world stage.
