Madrid, Spain – Real Madrid’s renowned Estadio Santiago Bernabeu is undergoing a jaw-dropping transformation, poised to claim the title of the world’s premier stadium after a lavish £500 million makeover that commenced in March.
The grand vision for this ambitious stadium rejuvenation project had been simmering for over five years before finally receiving the green light from the city’s council.
The ambitious redevelopment plan encompasses a striking new metallic facade, the addition of an on-site hotel, a cutting-edge 360-degree screen, a retractable roof, and a comprehensive refurbishment of private boxes.
Among the most intriguing features of this grand transformation is the creation of a “secret underground cave” designed to house a removable pitch, making the venue versatile for hosting concerts and other events.

According to reports from Marca, the club has already initiated the installation of this subterranean marvel, employing a complex system of plates and rails to facilitate the movement of the playing surface as needed.
The pitch will find its resting place in a concealed “greenhouse” cave situated 15 meters underground in the West stand when not in use. In this hidden sanctuary, the grass will receive meticulous care, including precise watering and temperature control, ensuring it remains in pristine match-ready condition.
Although the ambitious Bernabeu makeover could span up to five years to complete, the club has officially set the target date for its unveiling as October 2022. Notably, this transformation will result in a slight reduction in the stadium’s capacity, from 80,243 to 80,242 seats.
In light of this extensive redevelopment, Real Madrid, with a home at the Bernabeu for 73 years, may temporarily vacate the stadium to expedite the transformation process, marking a significant milestone in the storied history of this iconic football venue.
