Italian referee Pierluigi Collina while reminiscing on his greatest football moment as a referee, shared that watching Manchester United score two goals in two minutes for a comeback win during the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich is a memory that is still stuck in his head.

“It was the last two minutes of the Champions League final. I saw the Bayern players on the bench getting ready to celebrate the title,” he shared.

“The fans in the stadium were happy that their team was crowned with the Champions League title.

“Suddenly Manchester scored two goals in two minutes and overturned the result. I will never forget how the English stands were filled with great noise as if they were roaring lions, while there was a funeral silence in the Bayern stands.”

The famous referee went on to add that the moment contrasted and he could see hope in one team and total despair in another.

“The Manchester United players were celebrating their second goal hysterically when I saw one of the Bayern players falling to the ground completely desperate and feeling great disappointment,” he went on.
“I approached him and found nothing to say to him except “Get up and fight, you still have fifty seconds!! At that moment I saw the true face of football, death and life in one stadium, people celebrating madly and desperate people to death!! ”
In the 1999 UEFA Champions League final, Bayern led for nearly the entire 90 minutes thanks to Mario Basler’s sixth-minute goal, before Manchester United scored twice in stoppage time to win the trophy.

After Bayern lost the final to Manchester, Sammy Kuffour burst into tears. His tragic moment produced an iconic image that evokes memories of one of the competition’s best finals.

Kuffour explained why he was devastated by saying that owing to the emotions associated with football, he does not like to be on the losing side.
