Italian referee Pierluigi Collina while reminiscing on his greatest football moment as a referee, shared that watching Manchester United score two goals in two minutes for a comeback win during the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich is a memory that is still stuck in his head.
“It was the last two minutes of the Champions League final. I saw the Bayern players on the bench getting ready to celebrate the title,” he shared.
“The fans in the stadium were happy that their team was crowned with the Champions League title.
“Suddenly Manchester scored two goals in two minutes and overturned the result. I will never forget how the English stands were filled with great noise as if they were roaring lions, while there was a funeral silence in the Bayern stands.”
The famous referee went on to add that the moment contrasted and he could see hope in one team and total despair in another.
After Bayern lost the final to Manchester, Sammy Kuffour burst into tears. His tragic moment produced an iconic image that evokes memories of one of the competition’s best finals.
Kuffour explained why he was devastated by saying that owing to the emotions associated with football, he does not like to be on the losing side.
