Richard Masters, the chief executive of the Premier League, has been warned by members of parliament of the United Kingdom about giving the green light to Saudi billionaires to take over the struggling Newcastle club. Mr Masters was told that allowing a consortium to buy the club would be sending a dangerous message given the deplorable human rights record of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The intervention of the legislators comes amid backlash from human rights activists who have expressed serious concern about the takeover bid. They have pointed to the vicious crackdown allegedly undertaken by the Saudi prince Mohamed Bin Salman to silence dissent.
