Manchester United player Harry Maguire has graciously accepted the apology from Ghanaian MP Isaac Adongo, who previously ridiculed him during a parliamentary debate on the budget last year.
Adongo, an opposition lawmaker, had likened Vice-President Mahamadu Bawumia’s economic management to Maguire’s on-field performance, describing the footballer as “the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence.”
This comparison was part of a broader critique accusing Bawumia of economic mismanagement and causing hardship for citizens.
Ghana is currently facing its most significant economic crisis in decades, marked by soaring public debt leading to widespread inflation and the depreciation of the local currency.
In the recent budget debate on Tuesday, Adongo acknowledged Maguire’s improved performance, stating that he had “turned the corner,” and extended his apology. Adongo praised Maguire as a “transformational footballer” now making notable contributions to Manchester United.
Maguire, in response, accepted the apology via a post on social media, expressing his gratitude and adding a playful note: “See you at Old Trafford soon,” referring to Manchester United’s home ground.

However, Maguire maintained his criticism of Bawumia, accusing him of “roaming” around the International Monetary Fund (IMF) “with a cup in hand.”
Last year, Ghana sought assistance from the IMF, receiving approval for a three-year, $3 billion program with an immediate disbursement of $600 million. Bawumia, heading the government’s economic management team, has also been selected as the ruling party’s candidate for the 2024 elections.
