A soccer game in France had to be prematurely halted when a firework exploded near the goalkeeper, leading to a distressing incident. This alarming episode unfolded during the Ligue 1 match between Clermont Foot and Montpelier on a Sunday afternoon.
A small explosive device, possibly a firecracker, was hurled onto the field by Montpelier supporters situated behind the goal, landing perilously close to Clermont Foot’s goalkeeper, Mory Diaw.
Following the sudden explosion, the 30-year-old goalkeeper fell to the ground, requiring medical attention. He was subsequently stretchered off the field as emergency responders rushed to his aid.
Match Suspended After Firework Incident
The match was temporarily suspended with Montpelier leading 4-2, and the stadium was quickly evacuated for safety precautions.
In the midst of Diaw’s concerned teammates gathering around him, Clermont defender Neto Borges seemed to express his displeasure by making a rude hand gesture toward the section of the crowd from which the firework had been launched. As a consequence of his actions, Borges received a red card.
Social media was inundated with angry reactions from fans in response to this incident, with some suggesting that Montpelier should face point deductions or fines for the misconduct of their supporters. One individual vented their frustration, saying, “This is unacceptable. They ought to have points deducted or, at the very least, be fined.”
