Sporting activities in the country have been suspended for the second time, almost exactly a year apart due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement was made by the Football Kenya Federation on Friday, March 26 in a move which followed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s fresh directives to curb the spread of the virus.

Uhuru, in his address, suspended all sporting activities, leaving the FKF with no choice but to suspend the leagues until further notice.

“Football Kenya Federation has with immediate effect, suspended all FKF Leagues and competitions, which include but are not limited to the FKF-PL league, National Super League, FKF Division 1, FKF Division 2 leagues, all FKF women Leagues, all FKF branch, and grassroots leagues as well as all FKF national and grassroots tournaments, until further notice,” FKF’s statement read.

“The decision has been occasioned by [Friday’s] national presidential address, with regard to the developing Covid-19 situation in the country and the urgent need to mitigate the spread of the pandemic.”

This is the second time sporting activities in the country are being halted, with the first incident taking place in March 2020 just when the pandemic had hit Kenya.

The first announcement led to the annulment of the league eventually, with Gor Mahia being crowned the champions in controversial fashion.
